A member of the Elk City School Board unexpectedly submitted his letter of resignation Monday night.

ReDon Brewer, who has served on the board for three years, cited business reasons for his decision, which took effect today.

"I've thoroughly enjoyed my time on the board and working with all of you. I will continue to support you and the school system in any way that I can. I know you will continue to do good things," Brewer wrote in a letter read by Board President Shawn Wilson.

Brewer was at the Board of Education building shortly before the meeting Monday night, but left before it began. Wilson said Brewer had to repair a water pipe that had busted at his business, Spray Zone Car Wash.

"ReDon visited with me and he just said he's got so much going on with his business," Wilson said. "He has plans to expand, and he just doesn't feel like he can give the time necessary to do as good of a job as we need him to do."

Wilson thanked Brewer for his service.

"He's been an excellent board member and a hard worker. I hate to see him go.

I tried to talk him out of it, but your business is your lifeline," said Wilson. "We all know this is an elected position that pays nothing. Anyone who is willing to serve in this capacity is very unselfish."

Superintendent Buddy Wood said Brewer was a good listener and an advocate for the students.

"You don't get that appreciation shown for doing a good job," said Wood.

The board has 60 days to find and appoint a replacement. The person who fills the seat must reside within the district he represents, a section of northwest Elk City north of the hospital between Randall Avenue and Pioneer Road.

The person the board chooses to appoint will serve the remainder of Brewer's five year term and would be up for election in 2014 if they wish to run.
