Letter to the Editor: Elk City Christmas Wishes 5k

Dear Editor,

Elk City Christmas Wishes would love to give a final report of our first year race and give a big thank you to all of our sponsors and local businesses that made our race a huge success.

We had 256 people register for the race, and even with the rainy weather we received before and during our race, we are proud to report that 190 people still ran in support of the fund raising effort that benefited the Mayor’s toys for tots drive in our community.  We also received many new gifts through the city commissioner’s challenge that went directly to the toy drive. Thanks to local businesses, 100 percent of the race fees went directly towards purchasing the toys for the less fortunate families in our area.

The entry fee for the race was $30 and when all was completed we were able to award shirts and medals to the participants as well as writing a check to the City of Elk City in the amount of $7,680.00. This money was used to purchase at least one large toy for older children and several toys to the younger ones.  This year, the money raised from Elk City Christmas Wishes, along with regular fund raising efforts from the Mayor’s toy drive, over 350 children received gifts they may not have otherwise received.  It brought smiles to countless faces on Thursday, Dec. 15 when the gifts were given to the children.

Sponsored by Hot Spot Truck and Car WashThis fundraising effort would not have been possible without our gold sponsors: Elk City Energy Services, Beck Trucking, and Elk City Outdoor.  Silver sponsors: Baker Hughes, Greg’s Hotshot, The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, Petroleum Equipment Company of Okc, Paragon Communications, Elk City Daily News, Daily Elk Citian, Page Jewelers, Barber Dyson Ford, TLR Well Service, Oklahoma Sports and Fitness, and KKZU the Zoo.  Bronze sponsors: Pedro’s Restaurant, Circle C hotshot, McAlary ATV, Kos Machine Shop, Interbank of Elk City, Great Plains National Bank of Elk City, The Pickup Toolbox, Link’s Inspection, Mostly Mail, 4Runner’s Logo and Design, Culver Electric, Riley’s Place Marlow, Ok, and Apollo Construction of OKC.

The following local businesses contributed door prizes to runners that aided in the draw of people that made the race such a huge success.  Thank you to Paul Jones Drug, Wal-Mart, Elk City and Clinton Ace Hardware, Home on the Range, The Branding Iron, Man St. Lion’s Den of Clinton, Maurices, Tractor Supply, EJ Quinn of Clinton, the Coyote 95.5, Sharpe’s, The Gift Shop of Clinton, Vogue, Chuck’s, Mazzios of Elk City and Clinton, The Attic Door, KFC of Clinton and Elk City, Gene’s Custom Tag, Hemmingway’s of Clinton.

A special thanks to Elk City Chamber of Commerce and to Tawana Thomas with the Conventions and Visitors Bureau for all the help and advice in this first year of many years to come effort.   A big thank you to our community and Elk City for once again opening your hearts and checkbooks while helping these children.  I look forward to planning next year’s events.  I am proud to be part of this community and humbled by the support everyone gave. Thank you.
