ECHS Senior Keegan Metcalf will play football for OBU

An Elk City High School standout athlete is on his way to Shawnee, Okla., to play for the first football team there in seven decades.
Keegan Metcalf signed with Oklahoma Baptist University Friday. The Bison won't have a regular season opponent until 2013, but could play scrimmages before then.
The senior moved to Elk City from Hobart after his sophomore year and quickly made a name for himself. He started the 2011 season as a wide receiver. He then moved over to running back, while occasionally taking snaps in the unpredictable "wildcat" offense. He's a dual-threat talent who also lines up on defense as a middle-linebacker.
OBU coach Chris Jensen said Metcalf will probably start as a running back.

Employees to take two days of unpaid leave per month until June

Because his office came up short on funding this year, employees in the district attorney's five-county area have begun taking two forced days off each month.
District Attorney Dennis Smith said he has the option of laying off employees, but he is already short on workers.
"If I reduce the employees more, that was going to create more of a hardship than having people taking two days a month off," he said. "We're hopeful it's going to be short-term. We felt like that was the best way to provide the services we're mandated to provide."
Everyone except for Smith will have to take two unpaid days off per month until the fiscal year ends in June. Smith must remain on the job because of state law.
"As an elected official, by statute, the provisions are that you can't do that," he said.
Smith said he does not foresee any cases being delayed or statutory requirements unmet, "but of course we don't know what's going to happen down the road."

Exotic animals from all over the world have surprisingly found a home for themselves right here in western Oklahoma.
Longhorn cattle, zebras, axis deer, sika deer, white fallow deer, giraffes, blackbuck antelope, scimitar oryx, aoudad sheep and mouflon sheep all live on about 800 acres worth of fenced-in land one hour north of Elk City.
Dr. L.V. and Pat Baker began the journey of buying and owning some of the world's exotic animals after a visit to Africa many years ago. They have been back three times since.
"My wife and I have always loved animals since we were little and we always had a bunch of them," L.V. said. "Then we went to Africa and that did it. We got so excited about the animals there."
L.V. recalls the trip to see a pack of gorillas and calls it the "most exciting thing he's ever seen."
"We started [the excursion] early in the morning," L.V. said. "The gorillas move every day and sleep at a different place every night so we just started hunting."
Once they found the gorillas, visitors are limited to spending only one hour near them.
