The Beckham/Roger Mills Unit of OREA met for their regular meeting Friday, February 10, 11:30 am, Elks Lodge, Elk City with President Don Roberts presiding. Loretha Roper led the Pledge of Allegiance; Don Roberts led in prayer.
The program was Valentine Songs with Lori Daubenspeck, soloist, and Jerri Headrick, pianist.. Lori sang, “Fly Me to the Moon”, “Paper Moon”, “Baby Face”, “Adelaide’s Lament” from “Guys and Dolls”., and “Underneath the Bamboo Tree“.
Jo Ann Seymour gave the devotion on “Friends and Friendship.” For the text, she used Proverbs 17: 17. You relate to an acquaintance, but being a friend is harder. A friend adds value to another’s life. Being a true friend takes time. Jo Ann said to be a learner. Find someone wiser and more spiritually mature. That usually means someone older. Seymour talked about being the kind of neighbor so the neighbor will see God in you.
Jo Ann told the group if you can’t name 6 people who would carry your casket, then it’s time to develop new friendships or be cremated.
During the business session, President Don Roberts welcomed Phillis Smith, who has been a member, but attended the meeting for the first time. Minutes were approved as written. The group talked about waivers granted on “No child left behind” and it’s replacement. Don announced the SW District OREA Meeting Thursday, March 29, 9:30 am to 11:30 am in Lawton. Jane Mershon will run again for SW District OREA Director to be voted on at that meeting. The state OREA Convention is Friday, May 11, 3233 NW Expressway, OKC. Don suggested the lunch tickets for the state meeting be paid out of our unit funds. The vote carried unanimously. June Lovelace will represent our unit as VIM (Very Important Member)at the state meeting. February 14 and 15 are lobbying dates for OREA, but members may lobby other dates during the legislative session.
The next meeting of the Beckham/Roger Mills Unit of OREA is Friday, March 9, 11:30 am, Elks Lodge, Elk City. The program is State OREA News by Norman Cooper, OREA Executive Director, OKC. President Don Roberts encourages good attendance. Invite others. Mary Fern Carpenter is to give the devotion. A Nominating Committee Meeting will be held following the regular meeting.
