The Ladies Petroleum Club has written a check for $1478.39 to be donated to Meals on Wheels of Elk City.
“We’re thrilled,” Donna Alford, dining room supervisor at Fairview Village, said. “We’re not government funded, so we need the donations.”
The Ladies Petroleum Club of Elk City was founded in 1977. It was organized to provide the wives of oilfield workers with an opportuniy to get together and meet each other.
The group once had over 100 members. They met to have lunch, play cards and volunteeer at various events around town.
The ladies volunteered for projects ranging from events for the Chamber of Commerce, Red Cross blood drives, raising funds for the Heart Association to organizing a yearly senior citizens lunch.
“We have helped with golf tournaments and kept score for them and the money we earned have given several high school seniors scholarships,” Mel Lantz, Ladies Petroleum Club member, said.
Their membership has declined to a point that there aren’t enough people to accomplish a lot of the tasks that they would like to do.
“We used to have 100 members, now we’re down to six,” Fern Lewis, member of Ladies Petroleum Club said.
Therefore, the Ladies Petroleum Club has decided to disband and they chose to donate any money left in the treasury to Meals on Wheels.
“The Elk City Meals on Wheels is such a worthy cause,” Lantz said. “It’s not subsidized by any state or federal funding.
